The exhaustion of fossil fuels in the future is inevitable. To save people from energy crisis scientists are developing devices that can use renewable sources of energy. Energy from sun, wind, and water can produce tremendous power that can last for a lifetime. However, the availability of these sources has its own limitations. For instance, solar energy is only available only in the day. Whereas, during the night user has to depend on other power sources. This is because there are no suitable devices that can store the energy produced from these resources. To overcome this issue, scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have come up with a new battery design. The new battery can store the energy in the form of liquid electrolyte and use it as per the requirement.
Currently, these batteries are under development phase and specifically designed for power grids. Due to their application, the batteries are massive and can store massive joules of power. The scientists are keeping the new battery under the category of flow batteries. The membrane of these batteries uses special polymers that allow a swift moment of electrons making them a better conductor.
What Makes the New Battery So Effective?
Using conventional batteries for the grid can be quite expensive for users. This is because of the large size of batteries and the intensity of the application. Studies suggest that using Fluorinated polymer membranes batteries can cost up to US$ 300/kWh. To reduce this cost it was highly necessary that new batteries and membranes must come into the market. It is because of this reason that scientists have come up with this revolutionary concept. These batteries can reduce the burden from the shoulders of the fossil fuel they were carrying from decades. This shall also help people to live in a world where pollution is extremely low.
Till the new batteries are under development phase, it is upon the people to use the fossil fuel judicially.
