Internet of Things – The Smart Way to Smarten-up Cities?
Data plays a crucial role in analyzing patterns, habits and feeding machine learning systems. And, some companies are clearly making a mark in the world using clean technologies. For instance, Hudson Yards and Sidewalk Labs’ project are changing the way cities operate in a big way. Here it is pertinent to note that while the former is from New York, the latter is in Toronto.
These test cases use data and Internet of Things to create a relationship between residents and communities based on reciprocity. Honestly, it is not as surprising as impactful. As, in a number of devices, such as appliances in households and cars, IoT works wonders. On large scale, it is radical, to say the least.
It is noteworthy that these are not bringing sustainability to the present – by helping existing tech. It is also helping with data that paves way for a better future through energy solutions that ate sustainable too. These patterns, thus, are optimizing usage for the years to come, creating an efficient community.
Understanding Impact – The Hudson Yards Microcity in New York
One of the most ground breaking features the project uses is the microgrid. Here, buildings in a thermal loop, connected for consolidation, works through heat demand. Cogeneration plants power this. But, it is still twice as efficient as wind or solar power. Why? Basically, it repurposes water for electricity generation for heating purposes. Besides, since the system is quite close in terms of distance, loss through transmission is extremely low.
As per estimates, the project protects the environment from 24000MT of GHG.
Understanding Impact – Sidewalk Labs’ Quayside Project in Toronto:
Here, an industrial area is turned to an area for mixed use. The primary idea behind is to lower carbon emissions by a hefty 89% from current average. Like Hudson Yards, it uses smart grid to utilize stored power and defer energy use that is not immediately required.
