Apple Users Spent Over $1 Billion on App Store in 2018 Holiday Season

Global customers reportedly spent around $1.22 billion on Apple App Store during the holiday season of 2018, hitting a single-day record with purchases worth nearly $322 million on New Year’s Day alone. On Thursday, the iPhone maker reported that spending on App Store topped $1.22 billion from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve.

According to Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Apple’s Worldwide Marketing, the holiday week of 2018 has been the biggest week ever for Apple with highest amount of money spent on apps and games, while the first day of 2019 set a new single-day record at around $322 million.

In a statement late on Thursday, Schiller also appreciated the inspiring work of Apple’s talented developers and support of customers from all over the world, as the App Store closed off an outstanding 2018 and kicked off the new year with a bang.

Earlier this week, the tech giant also announced that the App Store helped boost Services revenue to an all-time record during the holiday quarter. Apple services have set new all-time records of several categories such as App Store, Apple Pay, Cloud Services, and Apple Music as well as search ad business on the App Store.

According to the company, the most popular categories of downloads and subscriptions included gaming and self-care apps. Globally, multiplayer games such as PUBG and Fortnite were the top downloaded games during the holiday week, in addition to Asphalt 9, Brawl Stars, and Monster Strike. On January 2, in a letter to investors, CEO Tim Cook wrote that Apple now expects revenue nearly $84 billion, while it had previously predicted between $89 billion and $93 billion.

Outside of the iPhone’s business, Apple’s revenue climbed by around 19 percent year-over-year, with all-time record earnings from Mac, Wearables, and Services. Cook said that Services collected revenue worth more than $10.8 billion in the fourth quarter, projecting to a new quarterly record in every regional segment.

Apple is expected to report the results of its next quarter on January 29, 2019.
